What Are Nappy Cakes or Diaper Cakes and Why Are They so Popular?

June 8th, 2008 DarrenJohnson Posted in Parenting No Comments »

In recent years there has a been a strong trend to individualize baby gifts. Whether the gift is for a baby shower or given to celebrate the birth of a newborn, the search is on to get something expressive that really conveys the uniqueness of a special new life entering the world.

Couple that with the desire to give a gift that is practical as well as memorable and any gift giver has set themselves a hard task.

Enter the nappy cake or diaper cake – the name is interchangeable depending on your corner of the world.

So what is a nappy cake? It is an arrangement of nappies, that when finished, looks like a cake. They can be made as a single tier, or multiple tiers that look much like a fancy wedding cake. Decorated with ribbons, clothing, baby accessories such as bottles, baby lotions, rattles, clothing and soft toys – a well made nappy cake look stunning and will be a hit at a party.

Because of its versatility, the nappy cakes crosses both roads of the baby gift admirably. The nappies and gifts contained within it are practical items which the parents will find very useful. Every new parent will be surprised by the constant amount of nappies they suddenly need for their new charge – and how the bill for disposable nappies quickly adds up. And the presentation will produce all the “oohs and aahs” every gift giver hopes for.

When choosing a nappy cake, inspect the extras packed into the cake for quality. Most of the expense of a nappy cake comes from the time intensive production of the presentation. But there should still be a good match between the quality of the ancillary gifts worked into the arrangement and the number of nappies the cake contains.

If you’re not sure, ask about the brand of blankets, lotions and toys used and make sure you’re getting value for money. The last thing you want is for the gift to look fabulous, only for the parents to be disappointed when they unwrap it and find cheap quality products hidden within. That also goes for the brand of nappies used to create the cake layers. Some of the cheaper brands are thinner, and therefore easier to bend into roll into a cake shape. However skillful cake artists can create the same standard of presentation from the thicker more absorbent brands that the the parents will appreciate far more.

Lastly, the nappy cake offers one more versatility that is a great advantage to the gift giver. For baby showers, if the parents are unaware of the sex of the child, nappy cakes come in any colour - such as a neutral lemon that would suit either a boy or a girl. And of course if you do the sex of the baby, then there are the traditional blues and pinks too.

So the humble nappy cake can make the ideal baby gift,as long as carefully selected, and the popularity comes from its innate versatility, practicality and the elusive “wow factor”. Not many gifts can claim all that.

Good gift buying to you.

Finding More Mom Time

June 7th, 2008 AureliaWilliams Posted in Parenting No Comments »

What Mom hasn’t dreamed about having more time to herself? Moms are great at organizing their time each day to make sure that the household runs smoothly and the children’s needs are met; but they lack in the simple skill of setting time aside just for them.

Without their own “Me” time, Mom’s face burnout and stress. This can ultimately affect your spouse and children as well, so it’s important to find that Mom time for yourself and keep your sanity as well as your family’s. There are many ideas you can use to incorporate Mom time into your life and here are some of them:

Mothers’ Day Out - There are many childcare centers that provide a Mothers’ Day Out program. These programs don’t require that your child be registered for daily care, so you can use it only as the need arises. This is a perfect solution for mom time, because this allows you an hour or two a week to shop, hang out with friends or just pampering yourself.

Play Dates – Take a look at who your child’s friends are. Will their moms be willing to join you in a play date group? The moms in these groups can trade off and watch the other children while those moms get a short break. When it’s your turn, you return the favor and watch their children while they take some time for their own short break.

Tea Time - Taking even a short break during the day can be enough to recharge your batteries. See if you can keep your children entertained with a movie or some kind of game they can play amongst themselves. While they’re busy, you can sit down and enjoy a cup of tea or a drink of your choice. Take those couple of minutes to just sit back and enjoy a peaceful moment to yourself.

Date with Dad - It’s important for the kids to spend some quality time with dad. Why not suggest he take them out for a few hours, while you stay home and relax. The kids can go on an adventure with dad and you can stay home and appreciate the quiet atmosphere that you don’t normally experience.

Mothers’ Helper – Ever thought of having another person to help you out a couple of hours a week? If you don’t feel comfortable leaving your children with a sitter; consider having a sitter come in while you’re there. Some young teenagers that are fresh out of babysitting courses can use some experience before they go off on their own. This would be the perfect way to relieve you of some of your motherly duties and enable you to be just a “supervisor” of sorts while the sitter learns the trade.

These are only a few examples of what you can do get some time for yourself. Check with other moms and see what they do for their own Mom time. As a mom, you’ve done a great job with your family, but don’t neglect yourself in the process. Mom time is not only something you need, but deserve as well.

Single Parenting Problems - Mothers As Single Parents In USA

June 5th, 2008 JenniferA. Posted in Parenting No Comments »

Single mothers face a lot of problems while bringing up children in USA. Financial problems being the most important as ex-husband may not pay the court order money for child support. These mothers may not be able to do a full time job as a result they may not be able to pay for day care and may not meet the criteria for head start. Many are thus dependent on AFDC (aid to families with dependent children) or WIC (Women Infants and children). This dependence on welfare organization once established is difficult to break.

There are many reasons for the financial worries of single mothers. Although most ex-spouses fulfill their court ordered financial obligations regarding their children; a few of them do not comply with this court ordered support. The latter case not only results in extra psychological and physical burden on the single mother, it makes it difficult for her to fulfill the requirements of the child in regards to food and clothing. A lot of people may consider court ordered support as luxury; but on the contrary it is just enough to meet the requirements.

The children constantly grow so they require a regular supply of clothing and food. Education is not entirely free even in state schools. Similarly preschool children require child care, whereas day care is difficult to afford. More over the WIC or AFDC will not support the mother till the issue of court order is resolved. This means going back to the court again and making your ex-husband to pay either by wage garnishment or by any other legal way. It is not an easy task to find an ex- husband so the lone mother can do nothing than to rely on herself alone. This places the mother as well as the child in a danger of becoming homeless. These are the risks of single parenting.

It is difficult to afford daycare as they usually require up to $400 per month. Most lone mothers have to take a job. However with the daycare being so costly it may not be possible for the mother to work as well as look after her preschool children. The head start and the early start are good supportive programs but most of these mothers do not fall in the specified low income groups especially when receiving court support.

So they may not get any support from head start and have to bare all the expenses of daycare all by themselves. She might not get some help from the child’s preschool also. Actually she belongs to the working community among poor. These and such are the problems faced by a single mum in America.

Short comings in the welfare system also effect these single mothers. These mothers are considered the same as any other poor social group by many federal and state programs which run WIC and AFDC. On the other hand these women are more likely to suffer from many psychiatric illnesses which then become a major hurdle in getting job or other financial assistance. As a result of which it becomes difficult for them to gain financial independence and they become permanently dependent on welfare.

As a whole the single mothers living in USA face problems which are quite different from others. It is essential that more funds should be allocated for them

Getting Started With Child Adoption

June 3rd, 2008 GarryNeale Posted in Parenting No Comments »

Adopting a child is a major turning point in a couple’s life, which is why knowing where to begin the adoption process can be quite difficult. Adoption allows your family to grow, expand, and become whole, but it’s important to begin the journey properly and carry out a lot of research before you jump in head first.

There are so many choices when it comes to adoptions, such as international adoption, so it’s prudent to take it slowly and examine all your choices, and the needs of your family, before you make a final decision and start filling out paperwork.

You should conduct some research on the various restrictions and requirements involved with each type of adoption, so that you know what to expect, and whether or not you qualify for certain adoptions. Finding the right adoption agency for your family is also a concern, as not all adoption agencies are created equal.

There is more than one type of adoption, in addition to international adoption and domestic adoption. Open adoptions allow for some communication between the birth parents and the adoptive parents during and after the process, while closed adoptions are more traditional in that the birth mother or parents are less involved directly with the new family.

An international adoption is always a little trickier, whether you’re planning to adopt a baby from China or another country. An international adoption involves more paperwork, more complicated travel, and different requirements depending on your country of origin. An international adoption is, however, a popular choice among many families who want to help a child in another country.

You can choose to use the services of a licensed adoption agency, an adoption facilitator, or move forward with someone who is considering private adoptions. Adoptions through either avenue work well for different people in different situations, so it’s always a good idea to find what works best for you and then move forward with your plans.

Adoption agencies are often a good way to go, as they provide a wide breadth of services to families of all shapes and sizes. Even if you decide on a domestic adoption, there are many complicated issues involved with adopting that are often handled more easily through an agency that is equipped to deal with such matters. You may want to adopt from another state, for example, in which case working through an adoption agency is probably your best bet for sorting through all the requirements.

From the start, as you enter the adoption process, it’s important to realize that adopting is not an easy task. It doesn’t always work out the first time through, and you will have to contend with adoption laws and practices that sometimes work in your favor, and sometimes do not.

The entire journey will be a tough one, but if you stick it out and don’t give up, you should be able to achieve success and find the perfect child for your loving family. It will be well worth the effort in the end.

Tips Of Positive Parenting Skills - Parenting Guidelines For Single Mothers

June 2nd, 2008 JenniferA. Posted in Parenting No Comments »

Raising children as a single mother is a challenge. There are moments when you find that your life is in complete disarray and your house is in complete chaos. This is the time when you feel that you lack essential parenting tips as a single mother. It is better to have such arsenal at your disposal before you land in such a situation.

There are numerous ways to deal with various age groups. Confronting strategies for toddlers differ with those for teenagers. Your 16 year old boy is likely to make fun of you if he is told to spend some time in a thinking chair as he is being obstinate, stubborn and aggressive. On the other hand a few minutes time out will do wonders while tackling a 4 year old. So to be successful as a single mother you should have a set of parenting tips for each group.

Material regarding good parenting skills is widely available. A number of genuine and self proclaimed specialists are also around. A list of websites, books and other means in this aspect would probably require paragraphs. To make your life easy I would mention a few here. You can start with a library or a book shop. Single moms bringing up toddlers and smaller children will really benefit from the Parents Magazine. Unfortunately the major content in Parents Magazine is aimed at married parents. Among the various books available, you should go through at least a couple of them. Those who like Dr. Fan will recommend you his books. Dr. Terry Brazelton is an authority on child behavior. He is a father as well as a pediatrician. Even though a number of his books may be out of date, the attitude of babies and other children has remained the same since long. Last of all “The Well Trained Mind” is a good choice for those who want to train their children early.

A number of websites and organizations are available to assist single mothers with parenting tips. A renowned group is Parents without partners. They provide a wide range of information for single mothers. In the UK similar information is available on gingerbread. Early Start and Head Start Programs deliver the same services in the USA. You may not be eligible for their preschool assistance, but you can participate in courses and seminars which they conduct on positive parenting. Last of all you can look for topics like single parenting and single mothers through any search engine on the internet and get the required information. So if you are a single mother in search of parenting tips now you know where and how to get the required information.

If you require some parenting tips just now I can give you a few basics. As an adult you should be in control. Keep yourself composed all the time. This may not be easy, particularly when you find green finger paint all over your kitchen. The moment you become angry and irritable, you lose your composure. Such a situation may make your little child scared. To be successful always be composed and exercise control over your voice and actions.

Indoor Games For Kids – Enjoying The Dull Rainy Day!

June 1st, 2008 YogiShinde Posted in Parenting No Comments »

Well, the weather finally did it – sent the kids scuttling inside. And now, they are bored and waiting for you to come up with something for them to do. Fun indoor games are not as hard to come up with as one might think. There’s a little something for everyone as you let your imagination search for fun indoor games to play with your children or for them to play together.

Pretending

Of all the indoor games to come up with, pretending is one of the easiest for which to prepare. Experts are now saying that pretending is one of the most needful games that your child can play. Through pretending, children learn to think about how another person feels; they learn to role play as they mimic people that they know or imagine about people they don’t know; they learn to take turns as they play pretend with others who may want to be the same character they want to be; they learn to treat animals well because in pretending to be an animal, they learn how it feels to be hurt. Sometimes, on a deeper level, children re-enact a time and place where that didn’t quite work out as they wanted it to. When they replay it in pretending, they can feel better about what went on because in some way, they have taken more control of the situation in their own minds. There are many ways that pretending and role-playing is good for your child. All you need to do is have some basic items around to help the game go well.

Keep some old towels or sheets around so that the child can pretend to go camping or go hiking in a cave. Throwing a sheet over some chairs makes a great cave or tent. Keep some empty paper towel roles handy for emergency swords or microphones. A scarf or towel pinned to the shoulders of a favorite shirt makes a great cape for the super hero. Some old necklaces, ribbons, and pins are great dress up helpers for little girls and I can still remember running around in one my dad’s ties and his shoes that we were way to big for me. Make sure that your “stuff” is less important than your child and, within reason, let them use some of your household and personal items for their pretend games.

What is even more fun for your child is when you play pretend as well. When you welcome you child’s teddy bear, aka the new super hero or the new Preschool teacher, at the dinner table, you’ve entered into his or her game and it becomes more exciting because you are willing to play.

As we’ve already mentioned, your part may be to keep some supplies on hand and to participate when called upon. However, sometimes as the parent, you may need to give a little boost to the idea by asking them what they would like to pretend about. There are lots of choices:

Being a School teacher

Being a pirate

Being a favorite super hero

Being a great warrior

Having a space ship

Being a doctor or nurse

Being a fire truck driver

Being a movie star

All you have to do is ask the right question and get the game going. Your child is sure to have some ideas of his or her own as well. Help make pretending one of your child’s favorite fun indoor games – and maybe even a favorite outdoor game.

This article is free for republishing provided the resource link is maintained.

Having a list of few good Indoor games for kids can be quite useful to brighten up that dull rainy day. Yogi Shinde is a busy Mum and a webmaster of Preschool games website

Baby Shower Gifts

May 31st, 2008 BeverlySugarman Posted in Parenting No Comments »

Welcoming the arrival of a new baby can be one of the most joyous occasions in a family’s life as well as one of the most expensive. A gift that the new mother receives at her baby shower is one less item that she will have to purchase herself.

There are many different products that you can purchase to help the family with their baby needs. Baby bath products are inexpensive items that you can give as a baby shower gift. These products can include baby shampoo, baby lotion, baby powder, and baby soap. When purchasing these items, you should make sure to read the label to ensure that the products are hypoallergenic. You can also include baby towels and wash cloths. These should be made of 100% cotton, as this material is more absorbent and softer on the baby’s sensitive skin.

You may want to include shower gifts that include items to help at the baby’s meal times. These products can include baby dishes, baby utensils, a cereal feeder, and baby bottles (glass is recommended) and nipples. You should make sure to read the label to make sure that these dishes are microwavable as well as dishwasher safe. This will ensure that the new mother will get the most use out of these items.

Clothes are another item that a baby will need plenty of. If the baby is not born yet, you may want to buy a larger size considering some newborns can never wear newborn-size clothes as they are too big at birth. Buying clothes that are labeled for babies up to six months will ensure that they will fit and the baby may get longer use out of the items. You might also want to choose clothes in neutral colors if you do not know the sex of the baby. You should check the label to see what fabrics the items are made out of. Again, 100% cotton is the best as it is softer and also because the baby may have an allergic reaction to some synthetic materials.

Diapers are also a baby shower gift that will be much appreciated. To be on the safe side, you may want to purchase both disposable diapers and the cloth type if you are not sure of the mother’s preference. When purchasing the cloth diapers, some may require safety pins that you may want to include in your gift. Another item that may be needed with cloth diapers are rubber pants to wear over them. You may also include baby powder and baby wipes with your diapers. You should read the label to ensure that the wipes are hypoallergenic and also that they contain aloe, which will help the baby’s bottom stay soft.

Baby toys are also an option for a baby shower gift. Toys that are soft are the best for newborns, although toys that play music and have flashing lights can help develop a baby’s senses. You can check the outside of the toy box to find what is appropriate for babies to help you choose.

Any of these items would be appreciated as a baby shower gift. Again, any gift that the new family receives is something that they do not need to purchase later on themselves.

We have baby gift baskets that are cute and practical. Perfect for the newborn and new moms. For more information, visit this article on baby gift baskets.

Cloth Vs. Disposable: Which Are The Best Diapers?

May 31st, 2008 BeverlySugarman Posted in Parenting No Comments »

When making the decision on whether you wish to use cloth diapers or the disposable version, new mothers may be confused as to which type is the better choice. Getting some of the basic facts may help you to make the decision that is best for you and your baby.

Diaper rash is the greatest concern for most parents in choosing the right diaper. There are many things that can cause diaper rash. Lack of air circulation as well prolonged wetness against the skin can cause skin irritation. This irritation is the result of bacteria forming ammonia that will interact with urine that is left sitting against the skin and can lead to the growth of microbes. This form of diaper rash is found in both cloth and disposable diapers.

Some infants also may develop allergies to certain soaps, dyes, and chemicals that can lead to diaper rash. This form of diaper rash is found mainly in babies that wear disposable diapers. Concerns with the chemicals sodium polyacrylate (absorbent gel) and dioxin (a result of bleaching paper), and the various dyes used in the making of disposable diapers has caused the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) to become involved in various studies being done in connection with disposable diapers. The EPA has linked sodium polyacrylate to toxic shock syndrome while some dyes and dioxins can lead to central nervous system, kidney, and liver damage. The FDA has received complaints of headaches, dizziness, and rashes being caused by the fragrances found in some disposable diapers.

The United States Consumer Protection Agency has also had a variety of problems reported to them that are directly related to disposable diaper use. Chemical burns as well as noxious odors have been reported as being emitted from certain diaper brands. Other complaints deal with the baby tearing plastic pieces off the diaper and placing them in their mouth or nose. Children have also choked by swallowing tab papers and linings. There have also been reports of the plastic melting on the baby’s skin and the baby’s skin being stained with ink.

The Journal of Pediatrics has reported that 54% of one-month-old infants using disposable diapers had rashes, with 16% of these being severe cases. In an independent study by a leading diaper manufacturer, diaper rash increased from 7.1% to 61% when the use of disposable diapers was increased.

The cost of cloth diapers as opposed to the disposable type is slightly smaller, though not as much as you would think. The maximum cost of disposable diapers is estimated at $80 per month, while the cost of cloth diapers is $60 per month.

The convenience of using disposable diapers used to be greater than when using cloth diapers. That is not the case today. Many cloth diapers come with Velcro tabs so the use of large safety pins has been eliminated. These diapers are also made with several layers of lining to keep your baby drier for a longer period of time.

The choice of which diaper to use is totally up to you. While your baby may do fine with disposable diapers, you have the comfort of knowing that cloth diapers are a healthier and less expensive alternative.

Babysitters: Steps To Finding A Good One

May 30th, 2008 ScarlettCapelli Posted in Parenting No Comments »

With the way that the world is today, you have to use caution when dealing with other people in any given situation. The trust that we took for granted when we were younger has virtually disappeared. This is especially true when screening babysitters. There are many of these “caregivers” that range from being incompetent to actually being a danger to your child. There are a few simple precautions that you can take to ensure that you hire a capable childcare provider.

If the child care provider that you are interested in cares for several children, most states require that they have a license as well as regular health inspections of their home or center. You should ask for the phone numbers to contact the other parents of the children that the babysitter is caring for so that you can get their feedback about the quality of care that their children are receiving. You should also ask to see the caregiver’s license and any other documentation that they may have to ensure that everything is in order. You also may want to ensure that the care giver is child CPR-certified, and that their certification is current. This certification is also required in most states. You can also contact the babysitter’s local health department to discover if the provider has ever had any health violations and if they have, discover exactly what steps were taken to resolve the issues. These violations are public record so you should have no problem in acquiring them. If the caregiver has had more than one minor violation, you may want to acquire childcare elsewhere.

When obtaining the services of a “private” (non-licensed) babysitter, you should be extremely cautious. You should draw up an application, asking the questions that you feel are important. You want to be sure that you have a space for the potential childcare giver’s social security number and references. You might also want to ask for any certification, be it child CPR or certificates for completion of courses in child care. This will give you an idea of how much training the potential babysitter has had. After they have filled out the application, schedule a follow-up interview at a later date to give yourself time to check out the information that they have given you. The first thing that you may want to do is to use their social security number to do a criminal background check. This check can be done through your local law enforcement agency and can help reveal if the applicant has substance abuse problems or more importantly, a history as a sex offender. Once you are satisfied with the criminal background check, you should then check the applicant’s references to ensure that these contacts are professional and not personal. Now that you have completed a thorough check of the potential babysitter’s criminal and professional background, the next step is the interviewing process.

When scheduling the interview, you may ask the applicant to dress professionally to assess how they carry themselves, or casually if you plan to have them play with your children. The second strategy can give you an idea of how the potential babysitter will interact with your child. Once you have completed all of the previous steps and feel confident in the applicant’s abilities, you can then hire them.

A babysitter has the most important job in the world and that is the care of your children. This person will have close contact with your family so choose someone that you feel comfortable with and you will both have a successful working relationship.
